Is there a capability anywhere to visually filter certain text messages? I don't need to block anyone, just not get distracted at certain times. For example, only see messages from coworkers while I'm working. I know Apple has this capability in their 'focus modes', and I just want to make sure Samsung actually doesn't have this capability currently before I give up

No, your phone is not malfunctioning. It's not a feature... yet.

Yes. Go to Settings then Modes & Routines. You can set it up there.

Where is it under modes & routines? I haven't been able to find that particular feature. I know how to hide the bubble, but once I'm in the app I still see their texts

Open โ€˜Modes and Routinesโ€™

Ensure that you are in โ€˜Modesโ€™ (see icons at the bottom)

Find the โ€˜Workโ€™ mode then tap to open it. (If โ€˜Workโ€™ is not immediately available in the list, tap โ€˜Add modeโ€™ and youโ€™ll find it there or simply add it manually.)

Read, then tap, โ€˜Startโ€™

Choose whether you want this mode to start when you arrive at work or during your business hours, then tap โ€˜Doneโ€™

Tap, โ€˜Nextโ€™

Tap, โ€˜Do not disturbโ€™

Tap, โ€˜Calls and messagesโ€™

Add the contacts that you wish to allow to contact you during this mode.

Then tap, โ€˜Doneโ€™

Close the โ€˜Calls and messagesโ€™ screen by tapping the < at the top left.

(Allow some app notifications, if you wish.)
Tap, โ€˜Doneโ€™

Tap, โ€˜Nextโ€

Tap, โ€˜Nextโ€™ again

Tap, โ€˜Doneโ€™

There are more things that you can do with Modes and Routines

I don't think I'm explaining well. I already have it set where only certain people's notifications come through. I'm hoping there's a way to only see certain conversations within the the messages app itself, hiding all other conversations I haven't allowed. Or is that supposed to happen with this and my device is malfunctioning?

Since 2020 Google has been toying with a 'catagories' feature, where you could catagorize messages as either 'work', 'personal', or customized. You could then filter your messages by their catagories and see just those. So far, 'catagoies' have not been implemented in Google Messages.

You can catagorize your contacts in Google Contacts and jump to messages from there. I wonder if this be a work around.
