Restoring a backup after buying a new phone - restore always hangs

I'm trying to restore a Galaxy Watch backup on a new phone that I did on an old phone. The backup always fails to restore and now I can't recover my Faces.

Here are the steps for context:

I've bought a new phone. I wanted to disassociate my Galaxy Watch (first gen, model SM-R800) from my old phone which was connected through Bluetooth and associate my watch to my new phone.

From what I understand, this was not the way to go. The Wear application categorically refused to allow me to add my Samsung Account on the new phone and insisted that I add my Watch first. Doing that shows a message on my Watch saying that it will be "Reset" to factory settings. To keep my data, I had to migrate my data through a Backup on Samsung Cloud.

I created a backup on my old phone while the Watch was still associated with my old phone. Everything good so far. Migrated my watch to my new phone, resetting the watch in the process. Now I am trying to restore the backup on the new phone. Unfortunately, the backup always hangs at about 10%. However, if I restore "everything but faces", the backup process succeeds. Restoring "only faces" from the backup hangs at 0%.

I am suspecting that I backuped old/deprecated faces that may not be found on the Samsung Faces Store anymore. The backup is probably failing to restore a face name which it cannot found. Is there a way to "skip" the deleted-from-store faces and continue with the other Faces restore ?

If you have an original watch, many of the faces may not be compatible.  However, when making a backup of your watch you should also have the slider on to also save to the cloud, in case your old device is not available.  In order to switch a watch to a new phone, you must first set up the phone, log into your accounts and install the wear app.  After that, you have to go into the settings on the watch or the watch settings in the wear app on your original phone and select transfer watch to new phone, as there can only be one phone associated with a watch (but you can have multiple watches associated with one phone).  Upon doing this, the wear app will create a backup of your watch, and reset your watch to factory settings, it will then find your new phone and connect to your watch.

Just FYI, if you are still using the original Galaxy watch, it has the Tizen OS for which support has ended so, as I said above, your watch faces may no longer be compatible or supported.  You will have to find new faces. So, restore your watch without the faces and just get new ones.

Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated.

Yes, this is what I did. My watch is now associated with my new phone. Most of my faces are not available anymore. Anyway...

After that, you have to go into the settings on the watch or the watch settings in the wear app on your original phone and select transfer watch to new phone.
I am not able to find the "transfer watch" option in the Wear app. However, there is a "Connect to new phone" in the watch settings (last setting at the bottom of the page). Maybe I should have started with this option first. Hopefully, this option won't loose my faces again with my next phone.
