Message notifications are muted

My text messages will not give an audible notification. I have gone through the settings and verified there is a sound assigned to it, and yes, the notifications are turned on. I grt the pop-up notification at the topnotch my screen, but no sound. When I look at the notification settings, there is a greyed out bell with a line through it right next to the app name, and I can't figure out how that happened or how to make it go away.

In the notification categories do you have the sound assigned to incoming messages?

Try this. Pick a chat you are active in that you are likely to get a message from soon. Go to the dot menu and choose details. In details, choose notifications, then assign a different sound to that specific chat and see if you get a sound next time that person texts you.

Oh, and in the notification settings for the app, is the slider on for allow sound and vibration? That may be why your notification has the mute symbol. Pressing and holding the notification should bring you directly to the setting.

That option is missing for some reason.

Odd. That option should appear in every app that has notifications allowed. What happens if you tap on the muted speaker icon?

Just takes me back to this screen.

Check another app. If that option is there for another app, you should uninstall and reinstall Google Messages.

That option is there for other apps. No option to uninstall this app, just to uninstall updates. But then it won't let me open the app back up without reinstalling updates. And that does not clear it.
