I backed up my files before I transferred files to my new phone. The pictures in the gallery did not transfer and the original phone has been erased. Can I still access my old photos?

They should be backed up on Google Photos or if you had Sync with OneDrive turned on, they would be there.

I'm not sure but you can back up your files on google photos. But you won't be able to do it with your old photos that been erased

Where did you back them up?

Did you use Smart Switch for the transfer?

If not, why not!

Why would you factory reset a device before checking to make sure the transfer was complete?

This is the $64,000 question.  People are  in such a hurry to wipe their old devices before checking that everything transferred over or did not check their backup on whatever external device they backed up to in order to make sure that it was a complete backup.  Likely because they were in a hurry to sell it or trade  it in.  Since I keep my last old device (if it's working), I never reset them anyway.

Did you choose select all?

You said you backed up your files, where did you back them up?

Your photos automatically backup/sync with Google photos.  If they are not in your "gallery" or on your phone, open Google Photos and see if they are there.
