Galaxy S24

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! šŸ™‚

Bring back coloured notification items!! White is horrible.

Also, bring back the seperate AOD and lock screen settings. Rolling it all in together is such a pain! It's lost functionality my view. It's horrible.

You're saying that this was an intentional change that is tuned for a quality viewing experience. I don't see how this could have been passed through R&D without knowing that everyone who has a current Samsung phone is going to be disappointed with the way the colors are displayed. The display settings menu options barely makes a difference is the way the colors look. The statement that this is a "More accurate and comfortable" viewing experience is absolutely false. I just took many photos while in Fiji using my Note20 Ultra. The pictures were a great representation of what I saw with my eyes. After transferring those photos to the S24 Ultra, those pictures look awful in comparison. Please just release a fix to recalibrate the colors and fix this travesty. I really don't want to switch to apple.

I had to spend alot of time on a call to customer service regarding this issue.  They fixed it, and now my screen has reverted back.  REALLY!  I WANT MY S22 Ultra BACK!  To many frustrations with this new version.

Very frustrated.

Picked up an S24 Ultra today and will be promptly returning it and going back to my S21 Ultra. I'm a photographer. I edit photos on a $6000 laptop with a color corrected display. On my S21 Ultra the images looked just like they did on my laptop, as intended.

On my "flagship" S24 the blacks are washed out, yellows are completely off and any of my images look like they are dull and tinted. As a longtime, loyal user of Samsung phones, I couldn't be any more disappointed. How does a Samsung get something as important as the _display_ on a new flagship phone, so wrong?

This doesn't work. It adjusts the colour but it still looks faded and dull against the Samsung S22 Ultra. Might just return my phone. I wouldn't have thought the next generations would be worse than the previous ones. Especially considering how much you charge for these phones.

Apparently, my S24 Ultra is among the "first batch" manufactured, as I ordered it during the preorder phase. I suspect this because I have now seen the grainy display issue that supposedly plagued the first batch which was talked about, and which some others had too with their S24 series in the beginning. At a certain brightness level, usually very low on my device, there occurs a grainy pattern on the screen especially visible on grey/dark backgrounds. My wallpaper just exposed this as I am seeing it for the first time since I got the phone in February.

Looking closely, you'll see the "grains" all over on the screen, especially easy to make out in the darker portion.

This is the so-called "mura effect" they talked about, a phenomenon whereby each individual pixel finds it difficult to maintain the same brightness as the next. Sad to see, especially considering that it's a hardware problem on such an advanced, modern-day screen.
Has anyone else come across this on their S24 series?

I also did pre order my S24 Uktra and haven't found this issue luckily for me. Do you see this issue only on the Wallpaper or also while watching media or any other app?

It probably happens across, but most noticeably on dark backgrounds when the brightness level is very low and/or on extra dim.
