S24 Display Quality & AOD Missing Options

Hi All

I've just got my S24+ today to upgrade my trusty but ageing S10+ having not strayed from Samsung for almost 10 years. Naturally I was hoping it would be an upgrade in all departments but although on the whole it is, there's several annoying and unexpected downgrades that are making me seriously question whether it's actually worth spending quite a bit of money to change.

Firstly, the screen although pin sharp is really washed out. Even in vivid mode the colours are dull and the blacks are significantly more grey than the S10 screen, and even look washed out when put alongside my wife's budget spec A52! I've played around with brightness and colour tone etc but I can't dial it out, and my cousin who's got an S24 Ultra said exactly the same when comparing it against the S22 it's replacing.

Then there's some bizarre features missing from OneUI 6.1, the ones I've noticed so far are specifically in the Always On Display settings.  I use AOD to display as a bedside clock,  with my S10 and also in OneUI 6.0 / Android 14 on the A52 you can rotate the AOD to landscape orientation and control the brightness, you could even do the latter from the AOD lock screen by tapping twice on the clock to access the brightness slider. In OneUI 6.1 unless I'm missing something it seems all that functionality is missing, the brightness of the AOD is linked to the main screen brightness setting which is far too bright for overnight use, and you can't set it to landscape mode which I'd prefer when on it's horizontal night stand next to the bed. Why this functionality would be omitted I have no idea, but it's really annoying! Please someone enlighten me to some hidden menu somewhere that fixes all these issues?! 🙂

Such garbage - "The Galaxy S24 series' display is carefully tuned for a comfortable, quality viewing experience." I didn't know that a quality viewing experience meant making my screen look worse than the S6 I had over 10 years ago... Do not buy the S24, buy an iPhone which has a beautiful display

Dear Samsung,

Please do something to fix the washed out color on the S24!  I just got the 24+ and no matter what I do the colors are very faded and difficult to see as there is little to no contrast.  My old and tired S8 has much better color! None of the adjustments in the settings improve the lack of color saturation... Please fix ASAP - this problem is so bad I'm not sure if the phone is realistically useable!

@SamsungJustin , there is evidence from other forums (e.g. reddit, news articles) that the root cause is a bug that prevents the phone from switching to Vivid mode (i.e. turning on Vivid mode currently does nothing). Can you please follow up with the relevant engineering team and share the target date for the fix?

S24 ultra display is the worst one I had so far. I had ZFold 4 which was 100 times better. Seems like I am using a downgrade device. Such a disappointment!!

I don't know how you can say you've "carefully tuned" the viewing experience when both viewing experiences are nearly identical. Why even have the option then? I, like many others, really enjoy the vivid color profile and it actually makes Samsung phones stand out a bit because of it. Please fix the issue (because that's what it is; an issue, not a feature).

I believe that it is possible to achieve a comfortable, quality viewing experience in the natural setting for those that prefer it.

Myself and many users prefer the vivid mode in the past devices and would like to keep it available .

It's a bug. Don't tell me change my settings if they don't do anything, this isn't a hardware problem, this isn't a customer problem, its a software problem. Fix it.
