I have a brand new Samsung SD card that is 512 gb. I formatted using the files app and when I try to transfer my apps from internal storage to the SD card, I keep getting the error "not enough storage space" despite the SD card having half a terabyte of free storage.

You cannot use an app in external storage!

Full stop, not possible!

It is possible the phone does not support a 1TB card.  You might have to downsize to 512 gb.  You would get that kind of error message if the phone does not recognize the storage capacity of an SD card.

I'm sorry, I see you said half a terabyte.  It's still possible the phone does not support even 512 gb.  It is an S22, so it's a bit older and may not. I was under the impression that the S22 did not have an SD card slot, unless you are using it in a USB card reader.

Edited to add:  According to my Google search, the S22 does not have an SD slot, so you would have to utilize an external OTG flash drive or card reader dongle.

S22 supports USB-C 3 standard and can transfer files on external hard drives up to 2 TB. Maybe you are mistaking the partition size limit for the S22, or the retail models internal SSD size

You said you were using an SD card, not an SSD drive or a flash drive.  I went by what specifications you set down in your post. Put in an error report. https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Tips-Tricks/How-to-Send-Feedback/ba-p/3001692

This poster thinks they can run apps on a external drive.

Seriously!

You can run some casual games, but that's about it. The particular app has to have the "change" icon in the storage settings. Even so, I believe that function was actually meant for devices with an SD card, not an external device because I believe the alternate storage has to remain attached.
