I have a brand new Samsung SD card that is 512 gb. I formatted using the files app and when I try to transfer my apps from internal storage to the SD card, I keep getting the error "not enough storage space" despite the SD card having half a terabyte of free storage.

Have you tried connecting the SD card to another device and moving the same size file to the SD card?

Unfortunately, fake and/or faulty SD cards do exist.

It works on other devices and photos/videos are transferred easily

You cannot transfer apps to a SSD manually. You have to create a backup using a file management app like Astro File.
If you intend to try to use an app on an external drive, that is just not possible.

Why are you trying to move apps to an external drive in the first place?

No space on my internal storage. It is an support feature on samsung, even in app settings it allows the user to change the app file location
