Read receipts for certain people

Is there a way to turn on read receipts only for certain people in Google messages instead of everyone?

Google Messages does not currently allow read receipts for individual contacts.

Sorry, it's everyone or no one. If you respond or react, they know you read it.  If you have no time to respond and intend to respond later, just add a reaction to let that person know you saw it.
