Galaxy S24Did they provide the wrong unlock code, or did you enter it wrong? In any case, if they have a mechanism to correct it and it will take 7 days, just be patient and let them do it. If you need phone and text during those 7 days, download WhatsApp and start using that. Yes, of course, you can use your new carrier's SIM in a different device - but that assumes you have a different, unlocked device to use it in (buncha derps over there). Does your new carrier perhaps have a deal where you can get the phone "free" for staying with them for 2 years? That would solve the both the unlock issue and the using the new SIM.

Galaxy S24OK, so see if the other option of downloading WhatsApp is feasible for you in the meantime. Another way to go is if you and most of the people you contact most use Facebook Messenger, you can call and text through that app. WhatsApp may be the better choice if you need to contact anyone other than your contacts. AT&T says the will fix it in 7 days, but you never know with them. If you can afford to, maybe you can buy a cheap, unlocked anybrand phone to use with your new service and to keep as a backup device. BLU has some very nice sub-$100 phones on Amazon that would serve fine as a temporary backup. BLU was actually my first smart phone when they first came on the market and it was reliable and functional. Just a suggestion. Although by the time you get any new device, AT&T could have solved your problem.

Galaxy S24The problem is your carrier. Other carriers allow you to unlock your phone right in their app when it's eligible, no code needed. T-Mobile does. Selling you a locked phone is legal, it is a way of giving you a) a good deal on a phone and, b) keeps you with them for a period of time. I believe they are legally required to unlock it upon request and after 3 months on their service. Verizon, supposedly, unlocks the phone after 3 months and T-Mobile lets you do it right in their app and lets you know when it's eligible for unlocking. AT&T has always made people jump through hoops for anything.
