First would be to check its paid off or in full if possible depending on where you got it second would be checking the imei to see if its clear and depending on the carrier you can try to unlock it on tmobile I believe it can be done on the phone att has a unlock on there site not sure about verizon if its paid and all clear it shouldn't be much trouble to unlock
