I have a brand new Samsung SD card that is 512 gb. I formatted using the files app and when I try to transfer my apps from internal storage to the SD card, I keep getting the error "not enough storage space" despite the SD card having half a terabyte of free storage.

Isn't that what I said?

well it's implied that it's possible because the phone gives you the option to move apps to an external drive. Given that information I would assume I could move a game or some other app to an external USB drive and be able to run the app just fine. That's how I see it. At no point is there any hint that it won't work with certain apps/games or that you can't do it in general.

You should leave your apps in internal storage, even if you had a SD slit, apps will always work better on the phone's internal drive. Save your external storage for your photos and documents - and backups.

Is your phone's internal storage full or nearly so, prompting the move? I'm thinking it is possible the move process requires temporary use of additional internal storage and the phone is not seeing enough of that space available, not the space on the SD card. If you are maxed out, you may have to delete some (replaceable) files and/or clear cache first to allow enough breathing room for the temporary storage.

I cleared 30 gb of space to try and see if this would work. It still says not enough storage space so im assuming that the formatting had a partition error on the SD card

You've already been informed you cannot move apps from the phone to the external drive, that is most likely where your error is originating from.  You will not be able to transfer an app to an external device, unless you are doing it in backup mode via Smart Switch, where it's contained in a zip file as a compressed backup.  Try a Smart Switch backup and see if you get a complete backup onto the drive.  Then you will know if it's a drive error or a *you* error.

I did attempt a smart switch on the drive and as I expected, the smart switch app kept crashing each time I attempted, which means the drive itself is not partitioned correctly.

So, repartition/reformat the drive - on the device you anticipate using it with.
