Phone automatically forced new software update. Now it won't turn on the wifi. Try to turn it on and it will endlessly scroll searching for networks. Hate being forced to update my phone. Tech support wants me to factory reset my phone.

Hello, Welcome and thank you for being part of the Community. We understand how frustrating it is when you are unable to use Wi-Fi on your phone.

Troubleshooting for Wi-Fi connection include:

1. Reset the settings. Settings>General management>Reset>Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings

2. Test in Safe Mode. https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/how-to-start-my-galaxy-device-in-safe-mode

3. Clearing the cache partition.

To get to recovery mode:
- Turn off phone
- Once off, hold down volume up and power buttons simultaneously
- When Samsung logo appears, release power button BUT KEEP HOLDING VOLUME UP until the recovery menu appears
- Use volume buttons to navigate down to clear cache (NOT CLEAR DATA/ FACTORY RESET)
- Use power button to select.
4. A factory reset. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00062029/

For Wi-Fi connection concerns, you can try the troubleshooting here: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01001559

If the Wi-Fi is still not working after the troubleshooting, it is recommended to have the phone serviced. Did anyone else's wifi "break" after the latest update? I'm pretty sure samsung is purposely causing this to encourage upgrading. Thoughts?

After new update you need to reconnect your device with your PC or laptop.

You can connect your phone to your computer with a cable and do a transfer, or you can attach a flash drive and transfer your important stuff..  Your photos should be automatically backing up to Google anyway.

No, Samsung is not purposely breaking your wi-fi. Things happen after updates that are not anticipated. Sometimes things get jumbled. Clear your phone's cache partition after every update. That usually is enough to straighten things out. If that does not help, you may have to reset your network connections. It also will not hurt you to put in an error report instead of coming online purporting sabotage.

Yeah, you're probably right, still you'd think they get it right. I tried that and 3 other recommendations from their tech support to no avail. I'll have to try to connect it to my laptop.

I'm sure they got it right.  Nothing is 100% as there are millions of users and millions of phone configurations and Samsung does not know what (if anything) any user has done to modify their devices. Sometimes things just go wrong.  By putting in an error report it gives the programmers a log to go over to see where the snafu is. It also assists in seeing how widespread the issue is by the number of reports they get and gives them information to correct the issue. Something that cannot be done over the phone with a tech support agent.
