Resolution does not match my 49" monitor

When I use the Smart connect my screen appears compressed in the center of my monitor. It doesn't occupy my entire monitor.

You can manually change the resolution.  It is also possible that your computer's graphic board does not support the top resolution that the monitor does.

When I plug my monitor directly into my graphics card via HDMI cable the screen occupies the entire monitor

Why not use the HDMI connection, then?

I was trying to reduce the mess of cables around my computer but I guess,if it doesn't work, then I will use the HDMI.
