Wireless Android Auto Automatically Connecting

Who thought it was a good idea to give Android Auto full control of the phone? It repeatedly attempts to connect wirelessly to the point where I can't complete a simple task. This is extremely dangerous while driving and very annoying in general. There's no option to turn the off, reject vehicles (regardless of what the screen says), or any real control. Depending on the software, it will still attempt to connect repeatedly, regardless of the settings.

I've been a loyal S series owner since 2011 and these phones have went down hill. This along with all the other bugs and restrictions are ridiculous

Hello Motown423, Welcome to the Community. Se understand how frustrating it is for an app to take over your phone.

Have you tried going to Settings> Connected Devices> Android Auto

Check the "Startup" settings to see if it is set to start automatically.

If you go to Settings>Apps>Android Auto, is "Appear on top" toggled on or off?

Have you tried to clear the app cache or data? https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10001372/

Yes, I've done everything mentioned. None of this worked. Would it really be that difficult or practical to simply put an "on" or "off" option?

I do not have the power to add what you are looking for, and it probably won't happen any time soon, if ever, but I can offer these suggestions. If you have no need of Android Auto most of the time, you can disable it and then re-enable it when you want to use it.  Or you can keep it disabled and just use Google Maps or Waze on your phone without connecting to AA--just like the old days before AA.  Your phone will still connect to your car for calls and texts.  Since I still have to connect AA through a USB port, it's much easier for me to just use the phone for directions. I do not require to look at the map, just hear the turn-by-turn directions, and my phone speaker is quite loud enough for me to hear. FWIW, I agree that there should either be an on/off option or the choice of "never" for autoconnect.

My apologies. I misread your title for some reason. I was thinking you were a representative for Samsung. Unfortunately I use AA all the time in my commercial vehicle. The main issue right now is the wireless part. It constantly attempts to connect while I'm driving and there are two devices in my vehicle with wireless AA capabilities. The irony is I initially purchased items soley because of the wireless AA feature, now it's the biggest headache.

Are these phones becoming more and more restricted, and annoying or is it just me?

So you have not found the setting in your vehicle to turn off the auto connect? With the newer cars that have wireless AA connectivity, there is usually a way to turn it off. If it's not readily apparent, you may have to look in the manual or contact the manufacturer or dealer. At this point, it appears it's more in the car's control than the phone's. I personally don't see any advantage to AA other than being able to view the map on the larger screen. If you disabled it, as I suggested, you would still be able to connect your phone via BT for calls and texts, but will have to put your phone in a cradle and use the navigation from your phone. Or, you can just let the devices connect. You don't actually have to use AA, just because it's on. In my (older) car, I have to tap an icon on my screen, to turn it on, even though it's connected. Even if your current trip doesnt require navigation, AA just sits open on your screen ready for service.

It says right there in the settings that there are three options for auto connect: always, if used on last drive, or default which is set by the car. So if you have it set to default and it's still trying to connect automatically, that's on your car manufacturer. Chrysler, at least, has a setting where you can turn off auto connect automatically. I suspect that any car that uses U-Connect has this same setting. So, go into settings/connected devices/Android Auto and see which auto connect setting is on. If it's on default, then you have to look in your car's settings to turn it off.
