Can't Load my watch faces to Galaxy watch 6 classic after one UI 8

I have a GW 6 Classic. Over the years I created custom watch faces using WatchMaker to show my CGM blood glucose values, and with a graph. After the UI8 update my watch face disappeared from the watch. The WatchMaker companion app will not load on the watch, although it is listed in the apps list. I try sending my watch faces to the watch, but it fails. FYI, I have multiple scripts to run the functions, and used Tasker Project to set up the values.

I have reset the watch twice, tried to clear the cache, tried to reload the companion app after deleting it, all to no avail.

I can still get my readings on my phone, but it is inconvenient to pull out my phone and turn it on multiple times (especially when exercising).

If I'm correct the WatchMaker app is no longer supported so those watch faces can't be used anymore until they update the app to work correctly.  Im trying to find where I read that it wasn't supported at the moment

Edit this is from reddit

Watchmaker not working on Samsung Watch 6 with One UI 8 (Wear OS6) is common due to Googles new watch face format (WFF), requiring updated Watchmaker versions, but you need to ensure the app is updated on your phone, force-stop apps, clear cache, and potentially use the latest beta for fixes; some older custom faces might be incompatible until updated.

Why It's Happening

  1. Wear OS 6 WFF Changes: Google introduced a new Watch Face Format (WFF) with Wear OS 6 (One UI 8), breaking compatibility with older, non-updated watch faces and potentially the app itself.
  2. App/Face Updates Needed: Watchmaker needs to be updated by its developers to support this new format, and your existing custom faces must also be updated to the new WFF standard to work.

Solutions to Try

Update Everything:

  1. Phone: Update the Watchmaker app on your phone via the Play Store.
  2. Watch: Ensure your Galaxy Watch 6 has the latest One UI 8/Wear OS 6 software.
  3. Restart & Force Stop: Force-stop the Watchmaker app on both your phone and watch, then restart both devices and reopen the app.
  4. Check for WM Updates: The Watchmaker app on your phone may have received significant UI/functionality updates recently to support WFF; ensure you have the latest version.
  5. Clear Cache/Data: Clear the cache and data for the Watchmaker app in your phone's settings, and potentially in the watch's app settings (though this is harder on the watch).

Thanks for the reply. This is so frustrating. I don't know why Samsung would not have warned watch owners. Their are a lot of diabetics who use their watches to get their blood sugars and pump settings, and not just Samsung watches, but Pixel watches also.. I would have thought watchmaker would hve delivered a conversion.

Is it possible to roll back the UI update, until a solution is reached?

This is not a Samsung or Google issue, this is an issue for the developers of Watchmaker. You need to get in touch with them to update their app and watch faces to conform to Google's new format.  Neither Samsung nor Google have to adapt to them.  It is incumbent on every app developer to update their apps for the devices and operating systems they want them to be used on.

It is also not Samsung's responsibility to warn users that their custom watch faces may not work after an update.  They can't account for how anyone uses their watch and what they have running on it.  It's a known fact that some watch faces become incompatible with new watches and operating systems.  A watch face that worked perfectly fine on WearOS 5 may not work on WearOS 6.

Yes, of course you are right. I just was surprised and frustrated. I don't follow tech news, and spent more than a few hours trying to troubleshoot the problem. I now see that WM has released a new version in the past couple of days.

Sorry, I just saw your reply. I've been at a Christmas Party with family. Sorry to say, like I mentioned, it's up to the developer to correct the issue; this happens with every update. And sorry to say, no, it's not possible to roll back the update.

Thank you for your suggestions. I will try them. I see that WM has just updated their app. I will download it and try to get it working.

I was caught unawares of this change - I don't follow tech news, and it took me some time to ferret out what was happening. Having a smart watch that gives me my blood sugars has been a huge help in managing my diabetes.

I'm sorry , but Samsung agreed to this limitations. If Samsung clients wants to sacrifice the power consumption it is their choice. No watchface can give us this level of customizations as watchmaker or facer. Without it the watch is like comparing Ferrari to Lada. Dear Samsung - I just moved to my old Fossil watch. You losed another client.

I deleted watchmaker from my watch, cleared the cache on my phone. Restarted both devices (watch 2 times as described above) and reinstalled watchmaker on my watch. The watchmaker app on my phone asked for permission (so I did). After these steps my watchmaker app was up and running on my watch again. ;-).

I’ve tried reinstalling and setting up the Watchmaker face on my watch, but none of the functions or coded buttons are working. Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  • Deleted the app, cleared the cache, and rebooted the device
  • Reinstalled the app and synced the face
  • Granted all permissions (Hit "Allow" when prompted on the watch)

The face appears on the watch, but no scripts run, and no functions respond. If the face display alone is sufficient, that works, but functionality is missing.

For reference, adding the face manually (long press → scroll → select downloaded face) produces the same result: the face shows, but no features work.

It seems this may require fixes on the Watchmaker side before full functionality is available.
