Now bar with google maps

My google maps uses now bar. Is this something new. Didn't know it could.

If you don't want it to, you can turn it off.  Settings/lock screen and AOD/now bar.  Turn on/off the sliders for the live notifications you want. if you don't want the Now bar at all, turn them all off.

I like the now bar. And I like it for google maps too. Just didnt see an option for google maps in settings.

It used to only be 3. What updates the app

Only 3 showed on the screen when you first entered the Now bar settings, selecting "view all" brings up all the items you can add. It was always there. The Now bar, as I understand it, only shows when there is something going on.  I turned everything off, as I have no interested in the Now bar, so it does not show for me - ever.

What updates now bar? What app or is it firmware?

It's part of the OS. Samsung would have to update it.
