Can someone please explain to me how wifi and Bluetooth turn on, on its own? I happened to notice my phone's wifi and Bluetooth turn on without me having it on.
Wi-Fi can be automatically turned on/off in two different ways.
1) The "Turn Wi-Fi on/off automatically" feature, if enabled, allows your phone to control Wi-Fi automatically, turning it on when you're in places you use it frequently and turning it off elsewhere.
Presumably, this feature is intended to help save battery power as well as reducing the risk of accidental connection to an unknown/open network.
To change: Navigate to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi. Tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner and click Intelligent Wi-Fi. Verify the toggle switch is turned off for the Turn Wi-Fi on/off automatically option.
2) Certain apps, if they have the required permissions, can automatically enable/disable Wi-Fi on your device. You can view a list of recent offenders by navigating to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi. Tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner and click Advanced Settings. Click the Wi-Fi on/off history option to view the list of apps that have turned Wi-Fi on or off recently.
To change You can manage the permissions which allow a given app to control the state of your Wifi by going to Settings > Apps. Tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner and click Special Access. In the list that opens, find the option for Wifi Control and select it. Another list will open that reveals which apps can control your Wifi. Use the toggles on the right side to grant or revoke this permission for each app that appears here.
Bluetooth does not have a built-in feature to automatically turn it on/off.
However, Bluetooth, just like Wifi, can be automatically turned on/off by certain apps, if they have the right permissions.
To see which apps have recently done this, navigate to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. Tap the three vertical dots in the upper right corner and click Advanced Settings. Click the "Bluetooth control history" option to view a list of apps that have recently enabled/disabled your Bluetooth.
To change: Unlike Wifi, there is no special access for Bluetooth control. This means you can simply remove the app's Bluetooth permissions directly if you so desire. Simply select any app from the list of recents, open its Permissions tab, and remove the "Nearby Devices" permission. This should prevent the app from being able to automatically control your Bluetooth in the future.
