Severe Battery Drain

Hi.  I've never posted on this forum before and I hope I don't upset anyone.

For roughly a week, my phone has needed to be plugged in constantly. It has difficulty charging past a certain point (even when powered off) and drains instantly. For instance. My phone will say that I have 40% battery then suddenly turn off and when I try to turn it back on, it says the battery is at 0%. This is a sudden, drastic change in my phone's normal functioning. It does seem to coincide with the most recent update.

I have done everything I could think of and took advice from other posts on this forum (thank you all!). This includes:
-- Checking my charger
-- Removing the ability to run in the background from all non-essential apps
-- Near obsessively checking the Device Care and clearing apps using memory.
-- Restart
-- Running Samsung diagnostics -- shows nothing wrong
-- Trying a 3rd party app to gauge my battery's health -- it couldn't get an accurate read since I can't get my phone to charge up to 100%
-- Trying to get help from my carrier (that was utterly useless)
-- Cursing at my phone
-- Factory Reset -- this one is really upsetting because on top of the usual annoyances, I lost special features that I paid for on an app that is no longer updated/supported and I can't get them back. Plus, the Backup and Restoration processes took days, literally.
-- Clearing the partition cache

So, the only thing left on my list to try is crying and I'd really rather not.

Is this what other people are experiencing when they say they're having battery drain or is this something worse?

I would really appreciate any advice that anyone has.

Thank you so much and happy holidays. Stay safe.

Sounds like your battery is failing. Even if the diagnostics says the battery is good, it's likely not. Many times the diagnostic doesnt catch a dying battery in the early stages of failure. Did you just get an update?

Thank you for answering. I was definitely hoping that it wasn't the battery itself. Do you know if that's something my carrier could replace (I have device protection) or if I just have to get a new phone?

I did just get an update, yes. One UI version 8.0, Android version 16.

The update process itself takes an enormous amount of battery power and could put a strain on a weakened battery. As @CEParsons mentioned, after an update the battey needs to relearn your usage patterns. This still does not mean your battery isn't weakening. Even with having to relearn, you shouldn't have to charge more than a second time in a day. If you battery is not charging to 100% and you do not have battery protection on, it's likely a weakening battery. Your phone is several years old now, so it's definitely a possibility.

Carrier's don't usually replace batteries, but if you have insurance they would likely replace the whole phone. I don't know if they replace with a refurb or a newer model. If you have a carrier model, you may be eligible for an upgrade anyway.

Thank you for the additional information. That gives me an idea of what to expect with my carrier and I appreciate that. Upgrading is a possibility. I think you're right that I'm probably eligible.

Sorry you're experiencing this.

Galaxy phones have an adaptive battery feature that uses machine learning to optimize battery consumption based on your usage.

After a major software update, this feature resets and needs to relearn your usage patterns. You may notice diminished battery life for 7-14 while this process takes place.

However, instantly draining from 40% to 0% is more severe drain than what is expected during the relearning period.

Given the age of your device (the S22 series is approaching 4 years of age) battery degradation is a real possibility. Consider visiting a certified Samsung repair center to verify this and have your battery replaced if need be.

Find one near you: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/locations/

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much. I was afraid of the battery being the problem. I appreciate the information and the link to repair places.

You're very welcome. I see in your other comment you have some for of device coverage through your carrier. They will typically have specific processes for insurance claims and will walk you through that.

That is probably my best place to start. Thank you again.
