If you find them in trash, you should immediately back them up, so you don't lose them again for any reason. I use Google contacts, so my contacts go with me to any device.
Go to your phone settings, google, click on all services tab, scroll down to "Restore Contacts". Click and if they were backed up, you're back in biz !
