Galaxy ring does nothing if Galaxy Watch is connected

Galaxy Ring

Hello,

I've been using my Galaxy Watch with no issues for months.

Yesterday I bought the Galaxy Ring. Throughout the day I have noticed that the ring was doing nothing as long as the watch was connected to my phone. Please note that I was not wearing the watch, it was charging on my desk. For example, it's not tracking my heartrate at all. If I go to the heartrate page in Samsung Health, I can't even trigger a manual measure, the button does not show up.

Now, if I leave the house without my watch, or turn off my watch, then the ring starts working as intended. And I can trigger a heartrate measurement manually again.

I went to sleep at night wearing my ring, with my phone charging in another room. My ring did not track any sleep, or heartrate during the night. Again, because my watch is still connected to my phone even though i'm not wearing it, so the app assumes it should use the watch instead of the ring to track.

Now, I fully understand that while the watch is available, the ring is only used as a backup. However, when I'm not actually wearing the watch, I expect the ring to take over.

Surely what I have described above is not expected behaviour?

Best regards, Max.

EDIT: something else worth mentioning: if my watch is charging on my desk, and I'm wearing my ring, when I start a workout (let's say running), the workout starts on my watch, and it's attempting to read my heartbeat from the watch. On top of this, I see the lights on the ring flickering, it's also measuring my heartbeat, but not sending it to Samsung Health app. That makes absolutely no sense.

Hello, thanks for your answer.

Yes I have reset the ring but the behaviour remains the same.

EDIT: sorry, after further monitoring, it seems like the ring is now tracking correctly when my watch is charging. However, I'm still confused by 2 things: firstly, I can't manually trigger a heartrate measurement with my if my watch is connected but charging. And secondly, if I start a workout wearing my ring and my watch is charging, my watch is being used for heartrate tracking even though I'm not wearing it.

Is this expected behaviour?

Thank you for that information. I am happy to hear that your watch is not correctly switching to your ring. I would recommend submitting an error report, so our team of engineers can get a hands-on look at the heart rate symptoms you are experiencing: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Tips-Tricks/How-to-Submit-an-Error-Report/ba-p/3001692

Also, I have heard of some cases where people have had to connect their galaxy ring to their watch instead of direct connection to the phone.
That was immediately following launch though so I'd imagine Samsung ironed out that issue, then again it wasn't widespread and seemed random at best. All combinations of phone, watch and ring were affected but issue ceased after resetting the ring and connecting through the watch first.

Knowing what model phone and watch would make it slightly easier to try and help.
That's typical standard in these forums, as people post in the wrong subsection constantly so you should try to include the model of any devices that play a role in the issue you have, just wanted to let you know!
