Note 8 doesn't connect with DeX desktop PC

I recently installed DeX on my PC but when I connect my Note 8 to my PC DeX doesn't run. The USB connection is working because I can access files on my phone via Windows Explorer. However DeX is just stuck at the setup screen. Any suggestions? Does dex even support my Note 8?

Dex supports your note 8 when connected to a TV or monitor. 

Dex on PC came later and I believe that Note 9 is the earliest phone that works with it.
