I can't believe how illogical and silly the official released design is. First, to hide horizontal vs vertical behind the terms "custom" and "alphabetical" is nonsense. Then, to associate that horizontal scrolling must mean the user has to see the apps in an arbitrary order without any help to sort them into alphabetical order.

This is absolutely ridiculous.

It should have been vertical or horizontal and then category, custom or alphabetical for both choices.

And, Samsung has an entire power user app, and they didn't even give or add any extra toggles or setting there, for one of the most common interfaces that the user will deal with.

I have deleted so many apps because of this annoying scrolling vertical. I changed to custom and now have to spend time trying to arrange apps alphabetically. I can't find the flashlight easily and have never wished bankruptcy to a company before today. I The childish looking crayon looking apps are hideous, they battery percentage is ugly. I had stopped updating the Samsung galaxy phone because of all the forced changes years ago now I guess it is officially time to change to another brand. If you are going to keep trying to make your phone like Apple I guess I should just buy them

There is a quick activation button for the flashlight in the quick panel.  No need to scroll through your apps for it. If you were using a third party flashlight app, it's totally unnecessary, as the flashlight is built into the OS.  In the image below, the flashlight button is second row far right (ignore the circled item at the bottom, the image is being reused from another post).   BTW, if you really do go through with switching brands, all phones have the flashlight built in and the button on the quick panel. Just so you know.

I found a way to get alphabetical back. 

It's not a great solution, but better than moving by hand.

Tap 3 dots in search bar

Tap custom sort

Tap 3 dots again

Tap settings

Scroll down and select hide apps on home and apps screen

Select all of your apps to hide (unfortunately one by one)

Then unhide the apps one by one - they are in alphabetical order on that screen. 

Close and your app drawer will be alphabetical.

If you add a new app it's probably easier to move it into the correct spot than repeating this.

That does allow horizontal scrolling but apps are out of order and just a MESS!

In the custom sort, the apps are not alphabetical, you have to arrange them how you want, but you will have your page scroll.  You can re-alphabetize your apps manually or you can arrange them in folders by category (or alphabet letters) or you can categorize each page, otherwise you will have to go to the vertical scroll, which is not that hard to get used to.
