How is it 2025 and Samsung still doesn't have the ability to support preserving what photos are favorited? Does anyone have a solution to preserving favorites? I want to move files to my computer (Windows, OneDrive) and not lose track of which photos I've favorited. Copying them into a separate folder isn't a realistic or good option

But one can set certain images as favorites and to view them is right there in the Gallery app. Open the Gallery to view an image and the "Heart" icon is on the bottom left, touching it highlights the heart icon that makes the image favorited. Then if one wants to view the favorites, they can go to the menu in the Gallery app and click on favorites and they are all there. If the favorite folder/album is not seen (I cannot physically see a specific favorites folder/album myself), then do this.

On your device click on the albums at the bottom. Then click the + sign at the top to add another album, name it whatever, but not Favorites, maybe Favorites 2 for example. Then go to the original favorites by clicking the heart icon in them menu, select the images (or all of them) and then copy them to the new album that was created (Favorites 2). The when your device is connected to your PC, you can see that album folder and the favorites you placed there, then you can to put them on your PC.

My phone won't let me copy photos from my favorites to another folder (At least not one at a time, while I'm viewing them.) Very frustrating. Favorites also doesn't show as an album for uploading. Almost useless.

Because each photo viewer has its own programming to indicate a favorite.  That data doesn't stay with the photo, it stays with the photo viewer.  So, if you favorite something in the gallery, it does not mean that would remain a favorite in Google Photos, or in Microsoft Photos.  The "favorite" designation is not part of the photo's metadata, it is a feature and function of whatever photo viewer you are using to view your photos.  Therefore, if you transfer your photos to your computer and are viewing them through whatever photo viewer app is on your computer, you will have to add the favorite designation to each photo once again.  You can do as @Tom6068 suggested and copy your "favorites" album from Gallery into a new favorites (the Gallery favorites album is only a virtual album to make your favorites easy to locate) album, and then copy that album to your computer.

Copying them into a separate folder is your ONLY option.

If they are in your gallery, they are already on your phone.  If they are not in your gallery but in Google Photos, you can download them to your phone from Google Photos.  If they are not in either place, then sorry, your photos are gone unless they were otherwise backed up elsewhere.  You can also check the trash in the gallery.
