You can turn the merge feature off.  Go to Gallery settings, by tapping the line menu on the bottom right.  Turn off the slider to merge albums with the same name.  Also, stop giving albums the same name, or at least modify them by adding a qualifier; i.e. album, album1, album 1c, album 2.  Unfortunately, I do not believe they can be unmerged once they are merged.  You will have to go through the albums and place them in the newly named albums.  This feature exists because in some cases people hide albums they do not need to see all the time and forget that they already have an album by a certain name.  If you do not want this to happen, you have to turn it off.

Is there any option to delete duplicate images and video to save space?

Yes, if they are truly duplicates.  If you are seeing what you think are duplicates because you are looking at "recents", be aware the "recents" album is not a real album.  It is a placeholder to easily access your most recently taken or accessed photos.  They are not duplicates, they are pointers.  If you want to delete duplicates, go to the file manager (my files), scroll down to "manage storage", tap that and then tap "duplicate files".  It will come up with a list of duplicate files and should include image file duplicates.  You can delete any or all duplicates.  If no files appear in the list, then you have no duplicate files. The files that appear in the list are the duplicates only, the original stays put, so if you delete the entire list, you will still have your originals.
