Sleep mode should automatically disable notifications except for any you allow through the do not disturb component. If it does not, you can adjust the parameters of sleep mode.
Sleep mode is preconfigured with an instance of do not disturb. The default parameters of this instance of do not disturb allows nothing through. All notifications and sounds are halted. You can go into that instance and configure it to allow exceptions, and you will only get calls and texts and notifications from those you configure to allow through.
Are you getting pop up notifications in your sleep? How would you know if you are sleeping, unless you are getting woken by the sound that goes with it. In which case, if you are getting sound, you can configure the mode to make sure your sounds are silenced, but that would defeat the purpose of allowing exceptions. The notifications will still be in your notification area when you wake up, but you will not have been disturbed by them.
