Why did they change Smart Lock to Extended Devices? That name is so dumb.

So now the new name on my S23 FE is Extended Locks on the UI 6.1 update.
Why would Samsung remove a feature that hundreds of thousands use daily?

Update 6-6-2025: Trusted Device feature on my S23FE (T-Mobile is my carrier) is no longer on my phone as an option for unlocking the phone. They're some devices that still have that feature but many phones don't.

Many are blaming Google for an update change, I just want that feature back.

I have an A54 running OneUI6.1 and my Extend Unlock (not extended devices) includes trusted devices, as well as on-body detection and trusted places.  As a matter of fact, my watches are listed as trusted devices.  If you prefer your device to remain unlocked when connected to a trusted device and the option is not there for you (it should most definitely be, clear your phone cache), then just create a routine to make it so. Similarly, instead of using the very inaccurate "trusted places", create a routine to use trusted wi-fi networks or an address with an expanded radius.  It will work perfectly.

Smart Lock, now know as Extended Unlock, still does the same things as before:

On Body Detection

Trusted Places

Trusted Decices

When you use any of these actions on your lockscreen it will say, EXTENDED UNLOCK.

Not all phones have trusted devices on the Extended Lock feature. My S23FE doesn't have it on the list anymore.

If it's not on the list, something is wrong, it should be there.  In any case, if you want to keep your phone unlocked when connected to a trusted device, just create a routine:

If: connected to Bluetooth device <name device>

Then: Keep phone unlocked.

Same as if you wanted to keep it unlocked at home or work when connected to your home or work wi-fi (better than trusted places).  You would just add "connected to wi-fi network <name network>" to the same routine.  When any of the if conditions are met, your phone will remain unlocked.

And, it will still say "extended unlock".  Who cares about what it's called?  Extend Unlock is a more accurate name, anyway.

The routine doesn't work that great I've been using it since our last conversation. It's a terrible feature for the Bluetooth connectivity. It kicks me out a lot and then I have to put my password in again. Another terrible feature. Why don't they ever listen to the users it's not just phones, it's also movies and games. I can't stand companies that don't bother to listen to their audience.1750709129734.jpg1750709129759.jpg

I set up the routine correctly I just don't like that or doesn't work like trusted devices. If they had left it alone many people would not be upset with what happened. There are others who lost this feature on their phones.

Even with extended unlock, the phone will only stay unlocked for four hours.  After four hours or a missed call, missed notification or reboot, the phone will lock and you will be asked to unlock with your fingerprint or PIN.  After 72 hours, you will be asked to unlock with your normal unlock method.  This is for your security and protection of your personal information.  This cannot be circumvented.

If you are running the routine and getting "kicked off", this is probably the reason.  Either that, or you are putting your watch on the charger and then moving out of BT range.  Move out of range of your trusted device and your phone will lock.  This is why I add the wi-fi network parameter to the routine. It's more accurate than location/trusted places and will keep you connected and unlocked unless you disconnect from the network.  You can add multiple wi-fi networks (home, work, etc.), and whenever you are connected to any one of them, the phone will remain unlocked.  Same as you can also add multiple BT devices, such as your car, in order to keep your phone unlocked in your car when connected to the car's BT.

It is important to note that extended unlock will NOT unlock your phone automatically upon booting up.  In order to remain unlocked, you first have to unlock it with your normal unlock method.

Thanks for the info I'll try that. Some of those things I'm aware of. I feel though like they removed "trusted devices " because they want us to use routines. Like if there getting ready to remove those features for some users to test the waters.

Samsung is not involved in some conspiracy to get you to use modes and routines.  Guess what?  Extend unlock/trusted devices/trusted places are basically routines anyway.  Routines are just easier to set up and access and you can create any parameter you want as a trigger.  For the record, I have the update, trusted devices is still an option for me in the extend lock settings.  Did you clear your phone cache partition after the update?
