Turn off transparency of status bar and nav bar?

Since the update to OneUI 8 the status bar and navigation bar are transparent. It is impossible to see the bar icons when any applications are open and the colors or text from the application overlap with the icons. It's an accessibility nightmare. I could not find any settings to disable transparency. Please let me know if they exist.

Screenshots attached showing what I'm referring to. Sorry for the poor quality; screenshots no longer include the status bar and nav bar in them since the OneUi 8 update so I had to take photos using a different device.

This is on an S22.

For Apps that are Full Screen like Maps You can do a workaround by Hiding the Camera Cutout, thereby allowing you to readily see the status bar.1769208784809.jpg

Thank you, this will help for a few apps where the visibility is the worst, at least for the status bar.

In accessibility settings/vision enhancements, there's an option to reduce transparency and blur.   It does not specifically say it affects the status and navigation bars, but costs nothing to toggle it on and see what happens.

You can enable developer options (go to settings/about phone/software  information.  Tap on the build number 7-10 times until the message appears that developer options have been enabled) and toggle off "transparent navigation bar".  Either or both of these combined with @Pianodude58 's recommendation to hide the camera cutout should help.

You can also download Good Lock's NavStar module and turn on the show/hide navigation bar so it will slide out of your way, even when transparent, so you can actually read and access that area at the bottom of the screen.

Under Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements, I have "Reduce transparency and blur" set to be toggled off. When I toggle it on, it makes the Quick panel menu (the one that appears when swiping down from the top of the screen) more transparent and harder to see, and does not seem to affect the appearance of the status bar or nav bar either way.

I will look into developer options.

I'd like to be able to read and access the status bar and nav bar, not the edge of apps, but I appreciate the ideas!

I tried Developer options > Transparent navigation bar, both toggled on and off, restarting my phone each time I toggled it, and it did not affect the nav bar at all, unfortunately.

Ironically the screen while viewing Developer Options has an opaque Nav Bar. ๐Ÿ™ƒ1769216321640.jpg

I contacted customer support and they told me to go to Settings > Display > Navigation bar, and adjust background color and transparency. However there is no option to adjust background color and transparency for me under this setting. I think maybe there used to be, because that seemed familiar as if I had done it before, but it is not there for me now. Now I only see options to change the order and swipe/no swipe for the navigation buttons.

If that setting was ever there, it was prior to OneUI 5.1, because it's not there in my backup phone settings, which is running that version.

You best bet would be good lock NavStar to show/hide the navigation bar, as at least that will keep it out of your way and slide up easily when you need to navigate. Ir, you can switch to gestures which will have no navigation bar at all
