Galaxy S22How is it too difficult to transfer the photos from Google? It's actually easier than cable transfer. All you have to do is open a web browser, go to photos.google.com, select the photos you want to download, then hit the dot menu on the top right and select download and, presto, they are on your computer in a zip file in the download folder. You can then either keep the photos in Google as an additional backup, or select them again and delete them. Deleting them from Google will also delete them from your phone. Moving them from the gallery or DCIM folder will remove them from your phone, but the Google backup will remain.
You can also just attach a flash drive to your phone and download the files from either the gallery, Google Photos or move them DCIM folder to your flash drive. moving them from the file manager will keep your album structure intact. You can then either keep them on the flash drive or transfer them from the flash drive to your computer.

Galaxy S22When you delete photos directly from Google photos, they are deleted from every device that is logged into your Google account. They clearly state this in Google Photos. It is a backup. If you delete the backup photos, Google assumes you either do not want them anymore or have them safely stored elsewhere. Same with OneDrive, however, OneDrive is not a backup it's a sync, which is worse, since it deletes photos deleted from either the gallery or one drive, so there is no backup. Keeping them on an external drive or flash drive would solve that issue. However, it is definitely your choice and prerogative not to use Google photos. It was not Google ruining your memories but your misunderstanding of how it works.
