Galaxy S PhonesThankfully, Samsung is one of the few (maybe only) brands that frequently offers FREE storage upgrades as a promotion. My current device is a 512GB model purchased for the exact same price as the lowest storage option.
Personally, I'm unlikely to fill that internal storage any time soon, but if I do, I'll move my files to an external drive and call it a day.

Galaxy S PhonesExternal flash drives are a thing. If you have so many photos taking up space on your phone, just curate the ones you always need to have with you and put the rest on a flash drive. You can always carry the flash drive with you. If your phone is lagging, you likely do not have enough free space for the apps to work efficiently and/or you have not been performing regular maintenance tasks, such as wiping the phone's cache partition, optimizing (defragmenting) apps, clearing app caches, and emptying the trash. The fact that you'd rather pay for cloud storage than empty your GMail, tells me that maintenance is not a priority for you.
As time goes by and new devices are developed, you will see less and less devices (of any brand) include this feature in favor of larger storage drives and more advanced hardware (even budget models).

Galaxy S PhonesNo one is forcing you into an eSIM. The eSIM is an option in dual SIM phones, as most of them are these days. Only Verizon requires an eSIM - they always did. Also, we accept that there is now new technology and larger storage space so there is no need to have an SD card slot on the phone. We all know how to utilize a portable hard drive or flash drive. No one is being forced to use or pay for cloud services if they don't want to. Options exist to store their precious data locally. Not a single person on this planet needs to keep their device full of every single photo they ever took. Every so often they can offload (backup) their photos to an external device and keep only their most desired photos on their phone. If they absolutely have to have every single photo they ever took with them at all times, then the can carry their flash drive with them. Many have keychain loops for that purpose. I have one that is small enough and attractive enough to be a necklace.
