Google is taking a page right out of Samsung's design language, make everything so small you can barely see it if you wear reading glasses.

The sent and read receipts are barely distinguishable now.! Ugh

Yes, I complained loudly and proudly to Google!

Without my glasses on, its very hard to see. Can I distinguish between the 2 colors, light and a dark circle of whatever color you are using, barely.

The double checkmark I can't explain.

Yes, I can see where it would be difficult to see, regardless of size, when contained inside the message bubble rather than below, or even alongside, it.

I know. But they probably should make the indicators scalable for people who use larger text. It's fine for me, but I understand why you don't like it.
