Figured out why the screen seems so dim compared to older phones. It's the Google Play Books curse again like in previous cases where our phones either had a weird tint or dimness to them. Even if you have never opened the app before, open it and if you have to download whatever random free book you want to. Open that book and look for font settings and turn screen brightness all the way up and make sure there's not a night time screen mode turned on. Then you can close out of that app and if you don't ever use it you can even delete it but after that your brightness settings should be a lot better. I had this issue previously on a Galaxy S8 where it had a weird pink tint to everything that was white and this fixed that.
