If you bought it used, someone could have just left the SIM card in it. You can remove it and put your own carrier's card in it. If your own carrier's card does not work in it, it would mean that the phone was likely locked to the previous carrier and you should return it.

The A42 was introduced in 2020. It's an old phone, probably leftover stock. That may actually be a dummy SIM just to demonstrate how to insert a SIM card.

I didn't say it was a joke. I said it may just be a non-functioning dummy card to demonstrate how to insert the SIM in the tray. Customer service from where? Samsung? The carrier? Just make sure the customer service number you call is legitimate, and you do not give out any personal information. It would not be the first time a counterfeit phone was sold as a new/genuine device. I hope you bought it from a reputable merchant. Customer service does not send notifications, especially when you have not logged in or signed up for anything.
