Is there a way to get RCS on my Note 20 5G? I've been told I have to upgrade which will suck. Samsung should have a better option than making customers upgrade $$

RCS messaging is available with the Google Messages app. It must be allowed by your carrier, though.

When you were told to upgrade it meant upgrade from Samsung Messages to Google Messages, not your phone. Switch to Google Messages and turn on the RCS chats.   Although, I have seen a couple of complaints about a recent update apparently disabling RCS on certain 20 series phones. Not sure if it's a fact or speculation, though.

If that's the case, you must recognize that as phones age out, not all features will be available on the older phones that are available on the newer phones, mostly due to hardware limitations. If I recall properly phones prior to the x4 series only had a 3 year support/OS update cycle, so the 20 series would be beyond that cycle.  What Android version are you on?  I think you have to have at least 13 to have RCS.

Final update for the Note 20 was One UI 5.1 (Android 13).

RCS is a carrier issue and the carrier has to support it.  If you switched to Google messages and went to the RCS settings, you would either see a slider to enable it along with your carrier name and phone number and RCS status, or you will see "RCS not available on this device. No compatible SIM card found."

Not true. The RCS feature is not an option to choose.

If the carrier does not support it, it can't be turned on. Also, you do have to turn it on to use it. It is most definitely optional.
