Hello,

I have been struggling with this issue for days and poured through existing forums to find a solution to no avail. I am in the process of upgrading my S9 to a google pixel device which uses google messages. All of my samsung messages didn't transfer over and the issue is because quite a few of my text messages are 'chat' type instead of 'text' or 'multimedia'. Google messages appears to only be able to import the 'text' and 'multimedia'.

Is there a way for me to convert the 'chat' messages to 'text' or 'multimedia? It affects pretty much all my messages in the default samsung app, whether they're group chats or one-on-ones. I'm feeling hopeless that I might have to give up on the messages.

I have tried (before I realized the issue):

- Deleting my google SMS/MMS backup and backing up again

- Using the third-party app SMS backup & restore (this is having the same issue as google messages, it can't see the 'chat' type messages)

- Direct transferring from S9 to new device (no change)

If you still have your S9 try this, download Google Messages to your S9, all of your messages should repopulate in Google Messages, then use SMS backup and Restore, make sure that you store them on Google Drive. They should then download to your Pixel

Hello, thanks! I still have my S9 connected to Wi-fi. Earlier when I tried to use the SMS backup & restore, it didn't seem like it was reading my messages correctly as the amount looked very small but I decided to select some chats because of your comment to backup and see what happens. It took awhile just with 41 chats selected, but after downloading the backup to my pixel, all my messages for my selected chats are there, including the ones samsung sent as 'chat'!

Thank you very much, I'm gonna do a large backup overnight.

It sounds like a feasible solution. I am not sure that messages from Samsung transfer to Google Messages. It is actually why I have been using GM since two S models in the past, besides being a much better app, with PINNED messages. Let me know if it works now.

@DJRich The SMS messages are stored in a database on the phone. Any SMS app you install will access that database for the SMS messages.

I tried what the commenter above said and it worked! I wish I knew about this beforehand, it was a headache for no reason. I didn't need to use google messages on my S9, just the backup app connected to my google drive.

All messaging apps are just readers for the texts that get sent through your carrier. You can have ten messaging apps on your phone and opening them will show you the same messages. As @LongHiker said, your phone has a messages database.
