I notice that when an app asks for a picture being selected, the photo selector for Messages [1] fails to render photos past a certain point.

A couple of questions:
  • Is this issue specific to the Messages app?
  • Is this a known issue?

It may be a unique problem to you.  I actually just coincidentally tested out the picture selector today in Google messages (I don't use Samsung Messages), for other reasons (I was curious as to whether the photos were pulled strictly from the gallery or from Google photos) and all my photos showed up. Fortunately, I do not have a zillion photos or it would have been an infinite scroll.  Are you using Samsung messages?  Seeing as that app is degrading rapidly because of Samsung's lack of attention to it, it may be an issue with Samsung messages.  You mentioned you were having issues in *any* app.  Have you cleared the phone's cache partition?  The app cache for both the gallery and Google photos?

I appreciate the information! To clarify, I am referring to "Google Messages".

I was able to reproduce this issue in another app "Berry Street". It uses the same underlying photo selector (see attached photo).

I went ahead and cleared both "Gallery" and "Google Photos" cache, but the issue still persists.

You cleared the app cache, try clearing the app data. This will refresh the app as if it was uninstalled and reinstalled. It won't delete any photos, but you will have to reconfigure your settings.
