In settings goto advance option and check the auto download message setting

Make sure your phone and Messages are updated. Here is how to check if each is updated:
Check your phone for updates:
Open Settings app.
Scroll down to the bottom of the options list. Near the bottom is an option called Software update.
Press download and install to check for Android & OneUI updates.

If your phone is up to date, try checking Google Messages for updates.
Open Play store.
In the app search bar, type in Google Messages.
Click the Google Messages app.
Check for an update button.
