It would be nice to have two default ringtones, one for contacts and one for calls from other than contacts.  If you added a contact, it would default to the contacts ringtone.  If you added a number to a contact, it would default to the contact ringtone.  However, a spam call or call from someone not in your contacts would have a different, recognizable, ringtone.  Currently, if my phone is not on my person, I let the call go to voicemail.  But, if I knew it was a call from someone in my contacts, I would be more inclined to grab the phone and answer.  Also, the contacts ringtone should continue to be able to be modified if I want to.

Since there is no facility to create a ring tone for groups, the ringtone used would be the ringtone assigned to the contact.  The groups designation is to make it convenient for someone to locate a contact, especially if they can't readily recall the name of their plumber.

I'm not sure what you mean. When creating or editing a Group, simply tap where it says "default ringtone" and pick a ringtone from the list. For my doctors' office group, I picked a ringtone that sounds like an office phone. My auto services group has a ringtone that sounds like a car horn.1763730015473.jpg1763730171559.jpg1763730403200.jpg

Oh, I see. I never went into that setting.  I still presume that the ringtone you hear will apply to the one set for the contact if you set a custom tone different from the default ringtone.  Otherwise, those in the group that have no assigned ringtone will ring with the group ringtone.  I think the assumption is that those you elected to give their own ring tone to you'd want to distinguish from everyone else.  Those in a group  to which a ringtone has been assigned, but have no custom ringtone assigned to them individually, will ring with the group ringtone.  You would be able to decide by the group ringtone whether to ignore the call, look to see which member of the group is calling, or just answer it.  Personally, I don't want to have to remember too many different ringtones, so I probably would not assign a separate ringtone a group.  For those you assigned to multiple groups, the phone has no way of knowing which group a caller is calling from for that particular call, so absent their own ringtone, would likely default to either the phone's default ringtone or the ringtone of the first group it "sees" the contact in.

This is a great work-around and I'll probably use it.  But, not everyone cares to use groups and if the ringtone was different (by default) for contacts than non-contacts, that would be simpler.

You can always create a group called "all contacts", assign a ringtone to that group, then add all your contacts to it by tapping each contact.  As I mentioned, those already having a custom ringtone will ring with their own ringtone, but everyone else in the group will ring with the "contacts" ringtone; everyone not in contacts will ring with the default ringtone.  You can also make a group for friends, family, business contacts rather than one long group of all contacts, so that you know what kind of call it is.

Groups actually mean nothing and can basically be ignored, all your contacts will still be listed alphabetically (or however you have them sorted).  Except for the creation or or changes to the group, you never have to look in them again.  The groups were meant to be a convenient organizational tool for people who may have hundreds of contacts and would like to quickly locate them within scrolling infinitely.  Sometimes I'm looking for one of my doctors' number and it's just easier to scroll through my "medical" group than down the whole list of contacts.
