I don't have adaptive brightness on and when this happens the brightness slider is still maxed out and turning on extra brightness doesn't help.

Eventually the brightness comes back up but this happens on my S24 Ultra after using the phone a while especially after watching YouTube videos. It does seem a little warm when this happens.

I don't know if this is caused by a software issue on One UI 7 or that my phone's display is dying. It is nearly 2 years old.

Adaptive Brightness:

The Galaxy S24 uses adaptive brightness to automatically adjust screen brightness based on ambient light.

If you find the dimming and brightening disruptive, you can disable adaptive brightness in the Display settings.

To do this, go to Settings > Display > toggle off Adaptive brightness.

You can then manually adjust the brightness using the slider.

2. Overheating:

If your phone gets too hot, it may dim the screen to protect itself from damage.

To prevent overheating, avoid using your phone in direct sunlight or while it's charging, especially with a wireless charger.

If the phone is overheating, let it cool down before using it again.

3. Power Saving Mode:

Power saving mode can reduce screen brightness to conserve battery life.

If you're in power saving mode and experiencing dimming, you can adjust the settings or turn it off completely.

To do this, go to Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Power saving.

4. Other Potential Issues:

Proximity sensor:

A blocked proximity sensor can sometimes cause the screen to dim as if it's near your face. Make sure your case or screen protector isn't obstructing it.

Software glitches:

Sometimes, a software glitch can cause the adaptive brightness feature to malfunction. Try restarting your phone or checking for software updates.

Incorrect calibration:

The light sensor on your phone may need to be recalibrated. If the issue persists, you may need to contact Samsung support.

5. Extra Dim:

If you're in a very dark environment, you can use the "Extra Dim" feature to further reduce screen brightness.

To enable it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements > Extra dim.

You can also adjust the intensity of the extra dim.

If you were using video intensive apps it's likely your phone was heating up even if you did not feel the heat. When the phone starts to overheat the phone will dim the screen until the overheating condition abates that's why it gets brighter again. This has nothing to do with adaptive brightness. It's strictly the phone protecting itself from being damaged. You may also notice some lagging or slow down of apps while the phone is cooling.

Adaptive Brightness is off. I only use that when I'm in the bright sun.

Your phone was protecting itself from over heating, especially in YouTube. I don't know why but YouTube uses an tremendous amount of GPU, with the display brightness at max it is very easy to overheat your phone, even if it doesn't feel that hot to you.

I never liked the YouTube app and usually use my favorite browser to watch their videos. Would this work for you?

I'm facing the same problem. After only a few minutes in sunlight it dims the screen which is very frustrating. I understand that they do it to protect the screen panel but, after only a few minutes! The phone isn't even warm or something. Samsung refuses to acknowledge the issue. Using the phone outside is a challenge. What a disappointment

The phone does not have to feel warm to be overheating.  The phone's internal sensor will detect an overheat condition and protect itself,  The first step in protecting itself is to dim the screen.  Also, even if the phone is not overheating and you do not have adaptive brightness on, the screen *will* dim in bright sunlight.  If you have adaptive brightness on, it most certainly will dim.  Also, don't forget, as with any LED screen, bright light will make it appear to be dim even when it's not, and if you are wearing sunglasses, it will be impossible to see.

This is an S24 blog, I am using the S23 but apparently people are experiencing issues with both.

I noticed this. The S23 Ultra is plenty bright for me, however if walking outside in a bright sunny day and adaptive brightness is on the phone doesn't go to 50% or 75% brightness it just goes to its lowest or near lowest level, while the brightness slider is automatically turned all the way up. There is no work around this particular issue unless you disable adaptive brightness.

Also if I turn off adaptive brightness and keep it at 100% it stays on, but then I have to constantly keep on changing the brightness manually. ODD? Why wouldn't the phone turn to 50% or to 75% brightness if it detected to much light?

Suggestion, add a max brightness setting in display.

Or fix the sensor so it doesn't cause the phone to go so dark you can't see it outside. I am not talking about leaving it in direct sunlight or anything. Just walking outside can cause the phone "sensor" to go so dark you cannot see the screen outside.

1.) Add a max brightness in display settings.

2.) Fix the sensor so it doesn't turn so dark if it detects to much light.

It's clearly a software issue because I can leave the phone on max brightness manually.  I am not one to nit pick I like the Galaxy phones alot. However constantly switching the brightness level is a strange annoyance considering how many features the phone offers.
