Galaxy S23
Oontz Angle plus speaker connects but the phone chooses headphones instead of speaker, every time. Due to my custom EQ settings for speaker mode vs headphones to work properly, I have to manually select speaker in bluetooth settings after pairing.
How can this behavior be stopped so that the correct speaker setting is chosen automatically??

This is a great question, and what you're running into is actually a known Bluetooth classification quirk that happens when certain Bluetooth speakers advertise themselves using the wrong audio profile or device type. The Oontz Angle Plus may be identifying itself in a way that makes the phone categorize it as a โheadsetโ or โheadphones,โ which triggers the wrong audio path and EQ settings.
Hereโs how to reason through and possibly resolve it:
1. Check Bluetooth Device Type Classification When your speaker connects, go to: Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > Tap the gear next to your device Youโll see Device Type โ if itโs set to โHeadphones,โ manually change it to โSpeakerโ. This setting directly influences how Samsung's One UI configures output paths and EQ.
2. Use Media Output Panel Immediately After Connecting Swipe down your Quick Panel and tap the Media Output button (right above the music player). This lets you manually route the audio and may help the phone โlearnโ your preferred setting over time.
3. Forget and Re-Pair With Speaker Designated Correctly
Go to Bluetooth settings, tap the gear icon next to the speaker, and tap Forget
Re-pair, and when prompted (or after connecting), immediately go into Device Type and select โSpeakerโ This may register a more permanent configuration in Bluetooth profiles.
4. Disable Audio for Phone Calls (Optional) Sometimes, the system prioritizes call audio profiles over media. In that same Bluetooth settings screen, toggle โCallsโ off, leaving only โMediaโ enabled.
5. Adjust or Reset Bluetooth Codec Behavior Go to Developer Options (enable it by tapping Build Number 7 times in About Phone), then scroll to:
Bluetooth Audio Codec: Set it to โAACโ or match what your speaker supports best
Bluetooth Audio Sample Rate: Leave it at default, unless your speaker is capable of higher fidelity and you know the correct setting
These steps can reduce handshake misclassifications.
6. Use a Routine or Bixby Routine (Advanced) Set up a Bixby Routine that triggers when your Oontz speaker connects. You can have it:
Open the EQ settings automatically
Switch device type or launch your preferred music app This wonโt change the speaker classification directly but could streamline your manual fix.
---
Why this happens:
Most Bluetooth devices broadcast their profile as either a โhands-free unit,โ โA2DP audio sink,โ or โmedia player.โ Some speakers (especially portable ones) use a profile mix that prioritizes headset controls, which tricks the phone into thinking you connected headphones โ even if thereโs no mic.
Samsungโs One UI then applies headphone EQ and routes, ignoring the actual use case (just audio out). Fixing the device type usually helps.
Let us know if after changing the device type and disabling โCallsโ on the speaker profile if the setting holds after reconnection. If not, there may be a deeper Bluetooth profile mismatch that only firmware or speaker-side updates can resolve. But this method solves it in most cases.

All advice failed. Audio Codec is SBC only as all other options are greyed out in Developer Options Settings. All current settings already matched advice given. I do not have Wi-Fi or high speed internet at home. Rural setting. Cellular only. Back to the drawing board! โ ๏ธ
