i have an s22+ and for some reason ive been stuck on ui 5.1 for the longest time, ive tried smart switch to update it but that has not worked once and i dont know what else to try. it tells me i need an update but says im upto date

If you've had the same carrier from the beginning, chances are the phone is carrier unlocked but the firmware is from a different carrier. The phone is probably looking for updates from that original carrier, which it won't find with the current SIM.

Your best bet is to get unlocked firmware flashed to the phone at an authorized service center (either Samsung or uBreakiFix). Here's how you can find both:

If you have a computer and can download the computer version of Smart Switch, you may be able to force an update.  Otherwise do as @Mujibar suggested.
