have a computer  with 512gb SSD, it is at 89% life, only 2 years old, want to upgrade to Samsung 990 pro 2tb

HOW TO CLONE THIS, from current 512 gb drive, does Samsung provide any standalone cloning software  (some of these drives used to have acronis available for download for install/clone)?

any feedback appreciated

If you can install the new drive in the computer and keep the old drive connect you would use Samsung Magician then you would open Magician and use the Migration assistant to clone the drive. If you can't install the new drive you would need to get a Adaptor to connect the SSD to the PC and then use Migration Assistant to clone the drive.  I used this adaptor to clone mine

Yeah, it's available to be downloaded for Mac, Windows, and Android. I've used it a couple of times to clone. It's the dedicated software to monitor Samsung drives and update the firmware of the SSDs.

I learn something new every day, I did not know you could use Samsung Magician to clone/migrate a drive - I've had a Samsung SSD for years and have barely even opened Magician to explore.  I thought it was just used to set up the drive.

I guess the clone/migrate option only appears if there's another drive present, as I don't see that in my list of things I can do and I am running the most up to date software.

can i install it to just do the cloning,  and not have it be running  otherwise in the background, etc?

do these drives NEED firmware updates?

Yeah, you can install it and then uninstall it. That’s what I do. I only reinstall it if I want to update the firmware or run diagnostics. Firmware updates are rare, so I reinstall it every six months to check everything.

thanks very much for all your info.  another question -  my c: drive (and d: drive) are bitlocked.

will magician/cloning clone the c: drive (since it is mounted, with bitlocker key activated), to the upgraded SSD, then let me insert the new  SSD (I know i have to re-bitlock it).

I've used paragon backup before, and it was able to do a clone in a decripted state

thanks
