Ice Maker Not Creating Ice

If your Samsung refrigerator is not making ice, don’t worry—most issues can be solved with a few quick checks. Ice production can stop if the temperature is too warm, water flow is restricted, the ice maker is turned off, or the ice bucket is installed incorrectly. Follow the troubleshooting steps below to restore normal ice production.

Check the freezer temperature
The freezer must be 0°F or lower to produce ice.
• If it’s set above 0°F, lower the temperature and turn on Power Freeze.
• Wait 3 hours, then check if the temperature is dropping.
• If the freezer won’t get cold enough, troubleshoot cooling first:

Make sure the ice maker area is properly sealed

If the ice maker is not properly sealed off, it may result in temperatures too warm to make ice.

Verify the ice maker is turned ON
Most models have an Ice Off indicator.
• If the Ice Off icon is lit, the ice maker is turned off.
• Turn the ice maker back on using your model’s control panel.
• If you’re unsure how, refer to your user manual.

Check the ice bucket
The bucket should only contain ice.
• Remove scoops, food items, or anything else that may block sensors.
• A blocked bucket can cause the unit to stop making or ejecting ice.

Reset the ice maker
Some models require a reset after troubleshooting.
• Look for the reset button (you may need to remove the ice bucket).
• Follow the specific reset instructions for your model:

Check water supply & pressure
Ice cannot form without proper water flow.
• Ensure the water line is fully connected and turned on.
• Confirm your water filter is fully seated and installed correctly.
• Low water pressure can reduce or stop ice production.
• Water troubleshooting guide:

Replace the water filter (if needed)
A clogged or expired filter restricts water flow to the ice maker.
• Replace the filter every 6 months or sooner if ice appears small, cloudy, or clumped.

• For more information on replacing the filter, visit: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS10005090/

Check Child Lock

Child Lock disables the display panel and the dispenser. Typically, when it is turned on, a padlock icon will be lit on the panel, and might flash when attempting to interact with the panel or dispense water or ice.

  • Some models have a Dispenser Lock, which locks the dispenser only. For information on how to turn off the child lock, consult your user’s manual.

Allow time for recovery
After resetting the ice maker or installing a new filter:
• Ice production may take up to 24 hours to return to normal.
• Some models produce small batches sooner (about 2 trays every 3 hours).

Model-Specific Notes

RF23D / RF29D Models
These models have ice scoop holders that must be installed correctly.
• The scoop holder should be installed at the front of the ice bucket.
• The word “REAR” should be visible on the back of the bucket when positioned correctly.
• Incorrect placement can block the ice maker and stop ice production.

Dual Cubed / Ice Bites Ice Makers
The ice bucket must be inserted in the correct direction.
• If installed backward, the scoop cover will block the ice maker.
• Check that the scoop cover is on the rear side (marked “REAR”).
• The back of the bucket should sit slightly lower than the front.
