I believe your first backup is not done right away, but during the night of the first day.  It could very well back up as soon as you are finished setting up, but I do not think so.  You can check under accounts and backup to see when your last backup was.  If you transferred you stuff over from a previous Samsung phone via Smart Switch, you should see a backup from the previous phone.  If you restored your phone from the backup of your previous phone, your backup will take place overnight.  You can manually backup if you want the initial backup to be right away.  Again, you would do this through accounts and backup.  The cloud only keeps one backup of each device in your account.  The automatic backup overwrites the last backup.  Your older device backups get deleted after a period of time - not sure if it's 90 days, 6 months or 1 year of inactivity.  Syncing is continuous.

@mac25657 I would never assume that. And not everything will be backed up. Some apps don't allow other resources to back up their data. Photos and videos are backed up separately since they consume a lot of space.

After you add your Samsung account to your device:

  1. Open phone settings
  2. Click on Accounts and backup
  3. Under the Samsung Cloud title, click on Back up data.
  4. Make sure that everything is enabled that you want saved.

Then enable the Google account backup:

  1. Open phone settings
  2. Click o Accounts and backup
  3. Under Google Drive, click Back up data.
  4. Make sure that all the settings are the way that you want them.

For photo backup to Microsoft Drive:

  1. Open the Gallery app
  2. Click the 3 line menu in lower right
  3. Click on Settings
  4. Enable Sync with OneDrive.

If you want Google Photos to backup your items:

  1. Open the Google Photos app
  2. Click your Avatar in upper right
  3. Click on Photos settings
  4. Click on Backup and configure it the way that you want.
