Longer messages usually get that option to see the full message. Among the others with this last UI update, the message reverts the text to dark mode or to dark grey font. Even as I'm typing here the text is light grey on a white background. The UI tries hard to keep the brightest backlight in the lowest of lighting but brightness and contrast are two different things... maybe stop trying to fix what isn't broken. So close to just switching to flip phone and reserving all other functions for laptop.
