Seriously, if you don't like the UI, buy a different brand of phone or choose a different icon pack. Every brand has its own UI, but most use the same Android icons, so they all look pretty much the same. The new UI looks completely different, so that may solve your modernization issue.
I'm using an icon pack so I didn't even notice the change on the icon front. I like the visual tweaks otherwise, but stock app icons are uneventful for me too so I found some cool ones.
