Suggestions for Solutions to the Issues with Unlocking Animation

Samsung’s interface has featured a lock screen unlocking animation, where the screen appears to shrink and adjust to its size, since the end of the TouchWiz era.

However, in One UI 7, unlocking to the home screen displays an animation where the icons start small and then expand to their correct size, creating the appearance of adjustment.

This animation brings a fresh change to the long-standing unlocking animation, offering a more refreshing and enjoyable user experience.

That said, the unlocking animation in One UI 7 only appears when the screen is locked while on the home screen, and not when the screen is locked with an app open.

This inconsistency feels quite noticeable, and the issue has been mentioned in various posts within the beta community.

While it’s understandable that displaying the expanding animation when an app is open might be challenging, adding at least a minimal animation would be appreciated.

Or, you could refer to the suggestion below for how to implement the expanding animation even when an app is open and apply it accordingly.

I created this animation myself. It is the same expanding animation, with a bounce effect at the end to make it feel consistent with how it appears when unlocking when we locked the phone when on lock screen.

The corner rounding should match the display's curvature to maintain visual harmony.

To explain the general mechanism of the animation: after unlocking, the colors of the background and the app screen (e.g., white for predominantly white screens, black for predominantly black screens) blend translucently with the background. Gradually, the color shifts closer to that of the app screen. At the same time, the blur intensity of the background increases, and the app screen, which starts small with only the corners blurred, gradually becomes less blurred and more transparent as it expands.

Hello,

Thank you for your detailed feedback and for sharing your concept for improving the unlocking animation. Your creative input and attention to detail are truly appreciated!

1. Unlocking Animation Consistency

Your observation about the inconsistency between unlocking to the home screen and unlocking with an app open is an important one. Ensuring consistency in animations across different scenarios would significantly enhance the overall user experience. The current gap can feel noticeable, and your suggestion to introduce a minimal animation—or adapt the existing one—offers a practical and elegant solution.

2. Proposed Animation Concept

The animation you’ve designed, with a bounce effect and smooth transitions, is a fantastic example of how this could be addressed. The idea of blending colors from the background and app screen while gradually reducing blur adds depth and sophistication to the interaction. Additionally, ensuring that the corner rounding matches the display's curvature aligns with maintaining visual harmony across the interface.

3. Visual Cohesion and User Experience

Animations are not just aesthetic—they contribute to a sense of flow and responsiveness in the interface. The mechanism you’ve outlined, where colors and blur levels adjust dynamically, would create a polished, cohesive experience that feels both modern and intuitive.

Your suggestions highlight opportunities to further refine One UI 7 and elevate its design standards. we’ll make sure your ideas, along with your example animation, are shared with the development team for consideration. While implementing such detailed transitions may require time, feedback like yours is invaluable in shaping the evolution of One UI.

Thank you again for your thoughtful input and for presenting your suggestions so constructively.

Regards,

One UI Beta Team
