GamingHello Samsung DeX Engineering & Product Team,
Iโd like to propose a technically feasible enhancement to Samsung DeX that originated as my own idea, with technical structuring and refinement assisted by AI-based analysis.
Proposal:
Allow the Galaxy phone to function as a virtual game controller while DeX is active.
This would require no new hardware and would leverage existing Android and Samsung frameworks.
Technical Overview
1. Virtual HID Gamepad Layer
- Implement a virtual HID (Human Interface Device) game controller within DeX
- Expose input via standard Android APIs:
- InputDevice.SOURCE_GAMEPAD
- SOURCE_JOYSTICK
- MotionEvent.AXIS_*
- Ensure compatibility with existing Android games without developer-side changes
2. Input Mapping Engine (Phone โ DeX)
Use the phone as the input surface while DeX runs on the external display.
Supported Inputs
- Touchscreen โ virtual buttons / analog sticks
- Multi-touch โ simultaneous inputs
- Accelerometer & gyroscope โ steering / motion controls
- Haptics โ vibration feedback from games
- Volume buttons โ optional remappable inputs
Profiles
- Default universal gamepad layout
- Per-app input profiles
- Manual remapping UI
3. UI / UX Implementation
- DeX Quick Panel toggle:
โUse phone as controllerโ - Phone switches to:
- Fullscreen controller UI
- Auto-rotation lock
- Low-latency input mode
- DeX desktop receives inputs as a standard controller device
4. Transport & Latency
- Primary path: USB-C (direct, near-zero latency)
- Secondary: Wi-Fi Direct / local loopback
- Avoid Bluetooth to reduce latency and pairing complexity
5. Security & App Isolation
- Controller input sandboxed to active DeX session
- App-level permission gating:
- โAllow virtual controller inputโ
- No background input injection outside DeX
6. Backward Compatibility
- Graceful fallback if a game doesnโt support controllers
- Keyboard/mouse remains available
- External controllers supported simultaneously
Strategic Impact
- Positions DeX as a console-class experience
- Removes friction for casual gaming
- Differentiates Samsung from stock Android desktop modes
- Increases DeX usage time and ecosystem value
This feature represents a software-layer enhancement built on existing Android input systems and Samsung DeX architecture.
Thank you for considering this proposal.
Best regards,
Saul
