When in maximum power saving mode, it's easy to select the 4 optional apps in the bottom row. Anyone know how to override and select the 4 apps in the top row?

Don't know what you mean by "optional apps." The bottom row of what? Your app drawer, your home screen? Can you provide a screenshot or some more description about what you're experiencing?

"When in maximum power saving mode". In max power save you can select 4 apps to use plus the preloaded ones like phone, messages, clock, and calculator I think. They're asking how to override the preloaded 4 and I don't believe there is a way to do it.

Thanks for that. I've never used max power saving mode.

I don't understand the need for power saving mode of any kind, let alone "max power saving" unless your battery is edging lower than 30% and you know you won't be able to get to a charger for awhile.  I understand some people like to keep power saving on at all times which, in my personal opinion, is not good for the phone.  These devices were meant to be used to their full capacity.

I was hoping there was a way to override the defaults but you're probably right.

In maximum power saving mode you get 8 apps (if you select the minimize apps option). Four are defaults ( Phone, Messages, Gallery, & Settings). Trouble is that 3 of those 4 apps are a waste for me. I use a different messaging app, would rather have camera than gallery, and rarely use settings in this power mode.
So, I'd like to change the default apps if possible.

They cannot be overridden as they are central to the essential apps necessary for the user functions access the key features of the device. I mean, why would someone want to remove the settings app, which would technically remove the ability to reverse that, because one would no longer be able to access their settings altogether.

There is no setting called "maximum power saving mode" but what is mentioned does seriously restrict background activity of any apps not included under the category "Maximum power saving" once it is toggled on, before turning on the overall "Power saving" toggle.

Install an app drawer app from the Play store and set it as one of your apps, now you have full access to everything.
