It would be nice to have two default ringtones, one for contacts and one for calls from other than contacts. If you added a contact, it would default to the contacts ringtone. If you added a number to a contact, it would default to the contact ringtone. However, a spam call or call from someone not in your contacts would have a different, recognizable, ringtone. Currently, if my phone is not on my person, I let the call go to voicemail. But, if I knew it was a call from someone in my contacts, I would be more inclined to grab the phone and answer. Also, the contacts ringtone should continue to be able to be modified if I want to.

Galaxy S25Yeah, it would be a pain to back track adding custom ringtones to each contact if one has many. Although, it could be a project for when someone has downtime. It's a lot easier to assign a custom tone when one adds a new contact. But your idea of adding it to important or favorite contacts makes the chore less cumbersome. I also like the OPs idea of default contact ringtone and default ringtone for other callers.

Galaxy S25You should send this as a feature request to the development team via the feedback feature in the members app.

Galaxy S25Go into the Samsung Contacts app. Scroll down through the list of contacts until you find one called Groups and tap this. The Groups button should be just below the Favorites section in the list of contacts. (See the screenshot. This button can be difficult to see, especially if you have a lot of favorites.)
Tap the plus sign at the top of the screen. Name your group and choose a ringtone for it.
I've included a screenshot showing some of the groups on my phone. Each has its own ringtone. When a contact in a certain group calls me, I hear the ringtone for the group that the contact belongs to and I can immediately tell that the caller is a doctor's office, family member, etc.
